The University is looking for an energetic individual who will be responsible for driving its vehicles with due care and safely transport passengers, goods and mail delivery, within the requisite approvals. The incumbent reports to the Manager: Transport in the Department of
Finance and must meet the requirements, competencies and be responsible for the key performance areas listed below.

Minimum Requirements
• Matric/Grade 12
• A valid code C1 driving licence
• A valid Public Driving Permit (PDP)
• Advance driving skills will be an added advantage
• At least two (2) years’ driving experience
• Ability to work outside of normal working hours
• Ability to gain a thorough knowledge of city and suburban streets
• Computer literacy

Duties and Responsibilities
Safe transportation of passengers, and to:
- Receive routes and destinations for drop-off and pick up of passengers
- Assist passengers with the handling of luggage
- Keep accurate records of kilometers, fuel and functionality of the vehicle
- Check passenger destinations and determine the most appropriate route
Transportation of goods, and to:
- Drive the vehicle into position for loading or off-loading
- Load goods onto the truck either by hand, or by using trolleys, lifting straps or lifting hooks
- Make sure the load is correctly placed and secured to avoid any damage to the truck or to the goods
- Plan the shortest delivery route and drive the vehicle to the destination
Mail delivery, and to:
- Collect, transport and deliver mail between post offices, campuses, and business centers, airports and rail terminals
- Inspect the location or office at the pick-up address to see what has to be moved, then pack and label items
- Drive defensively and handle all types of road conditions
- Check larger items against inventory, noting any wear and tear or damage
- Conduct general maintenance check of trucks and clean the vehicles
- Drop off and collect vehicles from merchants and airports transfers
- Arrange regular repairs, general maintenance and cleaning of vehicles, and to keep a record of maintenance repairs
- Ensure compliance with SHE policies and procedures, and identify and report unsafe circumstances
- Monitoring, evaluation and reporting responsibility by monitoring vehicles at all times for SHE compliance; completing required reports/documents; reporting defects, accidents, etc. and communicating and consulting with relevant stakeholders
- Perform any other duties as assigned by the line manager
- Contribute to the overall development of SMU and actively improve institutional culture
